2023 Port Lincoln Cup Wrap Up
The 2023 MGA Insurance Port Lincoln Cup saw incredible community support for a mammoth 10-race card meeting. With the stunning backdrop of the waters surround Port Lincoln and a lush green track in pristine condition, no one could have asked for a better setting for Cup Day.
Punters were very keen to make the most of the Friday Cup Day, with patrons eagerly waiting for the gates to open at 11am, with less than an hour’s wait until the first race of the day got underway. As punters streamed through the gates, everyone was in high spirits and brimming with excitement as one of the premier events on the Eyre Peninsula was commencing.
The day began under grey skies and some light rain, but this eventually clear as the day wore on. There was very competitive racing across the ten races, with large fields of horses contesting each race. Jockey, Alana Livesey brought home two wins in the first half of the racing program. Rochelle Milnes won Race 8 in front of friends and family, continuing her hot streak of wins on the Eyre Peninsula over the last few months!
Not only were there large fields of entrants for the races, it was fantastic to see a large number of entrants in the Fashion at the Races competition. Both categories, Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gentleman, were highlight competitive, with a number of different styles and interpretations of the current trends. In the Best Dressed Gentleman category, there were different takes on floral shirt patterns, paired with different coloured and textured blazers. In the Best Dressed Lady category it was evident that summer colours and styles were still on show even in the early days of autumn. Bright colours and floral patterns were on full display along with a variety of different millinery options. Everyone that entered showed their personality and made a wonderful effort. Fashion at the Races was certainly one of the highlights of the Port Lincoln Cup Day.
Throughout the afternoon the skies cleared and stunning blue skies greeted everyone for the start of Race 9, The 2023 MGA Insurance Port Lincoln Cup. The 2022 Port Lincoln Cup Champion, Splash Some Cash, returned to defend their title. Racing over 1960 meters, 14 horses battled it out. In the end Splash Some Cash prove too strong and took the honours and the cup for the second year in a row.
The community of Port Lincoln and the wider Eyre Peninsula community showed their unwavering support of country racing on the Eyre Peninsula and were handsomely rewarded with an incredible day.
Port Lincoln Racecourse will play host to the Kimba Cup in two weeks’ time, on Sunday 19 March. It’s set to be another wonderful day of country racing at the picturesque racecourse.
